Trip Report: 

Organized by Mike P, this "spur of the moment" climb took advantage of a late October window of perfect weather. The three of us left Eugene in the predawn darkness with Mike driving at 0600 and arrived at the Diamond Rockpile Trailhead about 2 hours later. On the trail at 0830 we reached the breezy 8,744' summit in about 4 hours. Despite the stellar weather on a hunting season weekend we saw only two other people (& one dog). They had ascended the more commonly climbed (& shorter) Pioneer Gulch route. We descended the SW ridge from the false summit which required several miles of cross-country travel to pick up the Pioneer Gulch trail and loop back to the car, arriving around 1630 (total mileage: about 11 miles). This will most likely be my last mountaineering trip until the good weather arrives again next Spring. Until next time, -Roy
